Jeremy is a registered geotechnical practitioner that has spent most of his professional career in geotechnical consulting. After graduation with a BSC (Hnrs) in 1978 he joined John M Weaver Consulting in Pretoria where he was involved mainly in investigations for buildings and townships, including those located over sinkhole prone dolomite. Jeremy obtained an MSc degree from Imperial College, London in 1981 and then joined George Orr and Associates in 1982, where he was involved mainly with dam site investigations. He obtained an MBA from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1987 and started his own consulting practice – GEO3 in 1994. He joined the family business Elro J Braak (Pty) Ltd in 1996 on the death of his father-in-law where he acted as managing director of Braaks Environmental Products until October 2004. In 2004 he returned to geotechnical consulting and started Geologica cc.

He has been involved in geotechnical investigations for a wide range of civil and mining projects including:

  • Civil:Geotechnical investigations for township planning, foundation investigations for various sized structures & power utilities, investigations for concrete & embankment dams, slope stability studies and embankment settlement analyses.
  • Mining: Pit slope stability studies, ground control management planning, geotechnical investigations for mine establishment including processing plants & TSF’s, training and development in geotechnical logging & pit mapping, plant foundation investigations, Codes of Practice.

He is co-owner of a dynamic cone penetrometer machine and a Marchetti Dilatometer apparatus for determining in situ properties of soils and weak rocks. He is also involved in the marketing and investigation of sites using the dilatometer (DMT) equipment.
